Tartar Sauce was borne out of Dr. Mitchell's research on “oil pulling.” Oil pulling is a centuries old Ayurvedic practice of using plant based oils for oral hygiene. The efficacy of oil pulling at preventing cavities, gingivitis and periodontal disease is documented in the scientific literature.
The putative mechanism of action is the adherence of the fat molecules in plant oils like coconut to the fat molecules in bacteria. The oil is thought to physically pull bacteria away from tooth enamel. That may happen. However, coconut and other oils used in oil pulling are also antimicrobials. The plaque that builds up on teeth and eventually hardens into tartar is a consequence of the immune system response to the overgrowth of bacteria and fungi in the mouth. If these organisms are killed off, this dampens the immune system response (inflammation), thereby reducing plaque and tartar. Products like Listerine contain essential oils that kill bacteria and fungi.
Dr. Mitchell took this concept to another level by substituting black seed oil for coconut oil. Black seed oil kills bacteria, viruses and fungi better than the lauric and caprylic fats in coconut oil. Black seed oil also contains substrates that the body uses to make vitamin A. Vitamin A adds structural rigidity to human tissue like teeth and gums.
Dr. Mitchell also added liposomal vitamin C. Vitamin C also adds to the structural rigidity of teeth and gums. This reduces the occurrence of bleeding from the gums. Vitamin C also kills viruses and fungi that cause mouth ulcers.
A revolutionary addition to Tartar Sauce is surfactants. Surfactants are the molecular magnets found in soaps and detergents. Food particles are removed from dishes and dirt is removed from your laundry by surfactants. Pure castile soap is used in Tartar Sauce to lift food, stains and microbes from teeth and gums.
Essential oils like menthol, thymol, peppermint oil, cinnamon oil and clove oil are also added for their antimicrobial effect. The result is a product that removes plaque and tartar and kills the bacteria and fungi that cause plaque and tartar. After using Tartar Sauce, your teeth will feel like you had a professional teeth cleaning.
